Dane Cook For the Riddler?
Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise reboot with Batman Begins and the Dark Knight have been a huge financial, critical, and popular success, so naturally the third film is going to be the subject of a lot of speculation. As of right now, Director Nolan hasn’t committed to the project, but one would assume there’s a truckload of cash being wheeled on his lawn on a daily basis and he’ll come back.
After the late Heath Ledger reinvented the Joker so memorably, the door is open to another reinvention of a classic Batman villain. The villain at the center of speculation is the Riddler, with names like Johnny Depp, Eddie Murphy, and (my personal choice) Guy Pearce being the subject of unsubstantiated rumors. Well, apparently Dane Cook has thrown his hat in the ring, saying:
“If they brought back The Riddler — a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker . . . I would do that. When they were making the new one and they were doing The Joker, I always thought it [should be] kind of like The Crow — having that dark element but still comedic. It would probably have to be something in that vein, even though I think what Heath Ledger did with the Joker was the greatest comic book villain ever.” Amazing how Dane Cook thought of that thing that revolutionized the Joker after it was done.
Good news: No one other than Dane Cook thinks they’ll let him do that. Who is Dane Cook? A wildly popular, mildly tolerable stand-up comic and a terrible actor. The only Dane Cook movie I’ve seen from beginning to end is his legendary team-up with master thespian Dennis Rodman in Simon Sez, blogged on here.

Not that I have any love for Mister Cook, as it happens I barely am aware of his existence, but I will tender him the benefit of the doubt in this instance. From the tone of the quotation, I got the impression that someone asked him whether or not he was don the green tights of the Riddler. He’s an actor and allegedly a comedian whose most prominent big screen role to date is being the romantic foil for Jessica Alba in a brainless romcom.
What’s the poor man to say when he’s presented with the query, “Would you like to play a significant character in a major franchise?” Perhaps, “No, I’m a rank amateur unworthy of consideration and destined to be the third lead on a fourth rate sitcom” would be the correct response, but perhaps too much to expect.

Liam Neeson, Heath Ledger, Dane Cook. Don’t see it happening, buddy.

The obvious connection between a Carrey-esque (and much less talented) villain with the third movie in the series veering off a cliff would be absolutely cataclysmic. Please, please Dane Cook, muddle around in worthless romcoms raking in millions of undeserved riches and keep your foreys into noteworthy films restricted to peeing on hardwood floors.

If it keeps him from doing any more stand up, then by all means cast him.
