I like to think that I don’t write web-logs — or “blogs,” if you will — I write essays on film. And every good essay has a central theme, which in reviewing films can be succinctly boiled down into something rather straightforward such as “This is a good/bad movie.” Not this time.

There aren’t a lot of nice things that I can say about the Condemned. The only thing that springs to mind is that, because I’ve seen the Condemned I have no need to watch the big budget Deathrace remake that opens Friday.

The Marine is the story of how very much Vince McMahon misses Duane “The Rock” Johnson.
No, the film does not feature The Rock in any capacity, but it does feature his hand-picked heir apparent. Let me explain:
Duane Johnson turned to the family business of pro wrestling (Johnson’s father and grandfather were also wrestlers) after his football career fizzled. Johnson became one of the biggest stars in the business in a short span, and after a few years of making McMahon (chairman of the WWE) tons of money as the Rock, Johnson started making movies. For a while, he made movies when he wasn’t wrestling, then before too long he was only wrestling when he wasn’t making movies, which wasn’t often. Nowadays, Johnson disassociates himself from wrestling in general and even “the Rock” moniker is fast becoming a thing of the past. (more…)
